Lose 5 Kilos in a Week

We have already spoken about losing 5 kilos in 14 days, so for those of us that are really serious or desperate to lose weight, let's make a bigger effort and lose 5 kilos in a week.

I know what you are thinking. It's too hard, or I heard that is dangerous, but I am here to tell you that I disagree with that. It's how you actually go about weight loss that really counts. You can lose 5 kilos in a week, safely, provided you do not have any pre-existing medical conditions.

If you are like I was, BIG, then it does not really take a whole lot of effort to lose 5 kilos in a week. All I did was to get off my backside and actually do something. So for the bigger guys and girls, just do something and watch the weight disappear. I think if you followed the suggestions on how to lose 5 kilos in 14 days then you might surprise yourself and do it the first week.

Just try what I have recommended in the past.

o Walk for 30 minutes a day or,
o Cycle for 30 minutes a day or,
o Swim for 30 minutes a day or,
o Box for 30 minutes a day.
o Stop sticking rubbish in your mouth
o Drinks lots of water and absolutely no soft drinks
o If you can't stop drinking beer, then cut back or try low carb beer.

Ok now for the rest of us who really only want to or need to lose 5 kilos in a week, here is what I could recommend you do, the safe way.

Actually weight loss is rather simple. No one said it was easy though. It's a simple matter of burning more calories than you are sticking in your mouth.

The first thing to do to lose 5 kilos in a week is to follow the suggestions I made for our larger friends. STOP putting empty calories in your mouth and yes, you guessed it, EXERCISE.

It can be done safely, I know because I did it myself and I actually lost a lot more than 5 kilos in a week.

Let's firstly look at diet.

Ok you only have a week to lose 5 kilos so a little bit of will power will go a long way.

o Try eating nothing but fruit and vegetables for a week. Juicing them is even better
o Eat 6 smaller meals a day and snack on fruit between meals if you get hungry.
o If you really must have meat, try to minimise the amounts and times you eat it. Cut off all the fat and steam it if you can.
o You can still drink coffee in moderation as it is a stimulant, but just BLACK.
o Make sure you have your breakfast and get plenty of sleep.
o Drink lots of water.

Now comes the harder part, the exercise. But if you really want to lose 5 kilos in a week, it's worth it. Cardio work is my secret.

o Cycle for 1 hr a day or,
o Walk for 1 hr a day - that's walking fast people, not strolling or,
o Row for 1 hr a day or,
o Swim for 1 hr a day.

Better still do a combination. Try and cycle for 7 minutes, then row for 7 minutes, then walk for 7 minutes, then box for 7 minutes all with only a 1 minute break in between. Do 2 sets or better still if you can, do 3 sets.

If you follow this plan I am sure you will lose 5 kilos in a week, maybe more. I will expand on this further in later articles.

Diabetes Glucose Level: What's Normal and What's Not

Have you ever wondered how athletes go through strenuous activities without going weak? The body, scientifically speaking, has a source of energy and this is the body's main sugar or serum glucose level. The cells get their energy from the glucose in your blood that was manufactured from the food that you ate. When doctors are aiming to diagnose diabetes among patients, the most common tests that they depend highly on are glucose level tests. This test, though, is just a part of a series of tests and even your medical history needs to be examined. There are two major glucose level tests that can be done to know for sure if a person really has diabetes.

The Fasting Blood Glucose Level - this is a complete fast. To fast completely means to go without food and water from midnight until the test is done. When the test result shows a value beyond 140 mg/dl (and with this same result after two tests), then the patient really is diabetic.

The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test - when doing this, the patient is asked to refrain from drinking water for at least 10 hours before the actual test. This fast should not exceed 16 hours, though. First, blood is extracted from the patient and then he is asked to drink 'glucola' or glucose cola. This high-sugar drink usually has 75 grams of glucose in it (for pregnant women, 100 grams is required). After 30 minutes to 3 hours, blood is again extracted from the patient. Then the doctor will be able to tell if he has diabetes or not by reading the patient's glucose levels.

These tests are generally performed, to not only test if the person has diabetes but also, to check for the blood's current glucose level. Once you are diagnosed with diabetes, your main goal should be to keep your blood glucose at a normal level. This will reduce the risks that the disease will have on you and also the attacks (which include being lethargic, having impaired vision, mental dysfunction, being irritable, nausea and even loss of consciousness). In prolonged cases of hyperglycemia, the major risks are nerve or kidney damage.

One good way to monitor your blood glucose level is to use monitors such as a glucose meter. This is the so-called SMBG or self-monitoring of blood glucose. The good news is, there are now portable glucose meters that can be bought in the stores. This means that there is no more excuse for diabetics not to measure their glucose levels.

Aside from these mechanical ways to monitor your blood sugar, you, too, can help in maintaining the normal level of your blood sugar. Here are some basic tips that could serve as your guideline in maintaining a normal blood sugar level:

1. Make sure that you take your medications and stick to your diet program. Talk to your doctor about these things. If you can insist on some foods that you really want and are nutritious and allowable, then go for it.

2. Get rid of excessive body fat by doing regular exercises such as walking. A word of caution: Do not engage in any form of exercise program without consulting your doctor first. He will be able to gauge whether you are able to undergo more rigorous forms of exercise other than walking.

3. Stop your consumption of cigarettes and beverages that have caffeine in them such as coffee, tea and some cola drinks. Avoid alcoholic beverages as well. These are the most harmful substances that can greatly affect your glucose level.

4. Learn to relax. If you can, enroll in yoga or meditation classes. If you are not the type that would go out and join other people just to be able to get in touch with your quiet side, then you can do some meditations at home or listen to calming music. And, of course, the best form of relaxation is - sleep. Take the prescribed 8 hours of sleep for adults.

5. Limit your intake of salt.

Remember that your blood sugar is an essential part of your system. It provides no less than the energy that your body uses up! The best way to do it is still prevention. If in case you were already diagnosed with diabetes, there is hope! Just keep that glucose level where it's supposed to be, live a healthy lifestyle and you will be able to achieve wellness in all aspects.

The third and final tip on how to lose fat arms is having a good cardio workout. Try walking or running. Not to much in the beginning. Just enough to feel like you had a good workout. Increase your distance slightly over time. You should have at least 3 cardio workouts a week.

How to Choose a Walking Stick

I am a retired principal and carve Walking Sticks from dead Aspen as I live in the foothills of Colorado. This hobby became a business for me when I retired. It began when I started carving sticks to give to my teachers.

My sticks are carved from dead Aspen. You may use hardwood for your stick or a softer wood such as Aspen depending on where you live. Look for a stick that is about 1 to 2 inches in diameter. Cut the stick about 52 to 54 inches long.Stand on level ground and measure to the crease in your elbow and add 6 inches. This may or may not be 54 inches,but this is the proper height for a stick.

The stick should be relatively free of deep cracks. If you cut something that is not dead, you will have to let it dry or age.The stick should be comfortable for you to use.You need a grip in the stick which is a must. Hold the stick as you would a ski pole to properly place the grip.

Use a power tool or a knife to cut the grip into the stick. Drill a hole above the grip and sand the stick using 80 grit, 120 grit and finish sanding with 220 grit sandpaper. When the stick feels smooth to the touch, use a sanding sealer to seal the whole stick.

When the sealer is dry, sand it and apply two coats of a fast drying polyurethane. These products are easy to find in the hardware store. Purchase a piece of leather strap to go through the hole and you are now ready to use the stick, unless you wish to have a rubber tip on the bottom of the stick. If so, you can find these in the hardware store to fit the diameter of your stick.

One last touch, is to burn dates and places that you hike, climb or trek as this gives the stick a real touch of character. This is much better than a steel trekking pole. Have fun hiking as it is good for the soul.

How to Walk Safely When Alone

At times, it can't be helped that you have to walk your way from work going to your home all by yourself. This can be pretty daunting, especially for females who are considered of lesser strength. It can be really cumbersome having to walk alone in dark streets. These are usually the places where crimes do happen. Do not fret though because there are tips on how you can avert from getting mugged while walking alone. This article aims to discuss some safety tips for those who typically walk or jog all by themselves.

Keep Your Composure
As much as you can, do not go walking along the street all by yourself. You can ask a buddy to walk with you. However, when you are left with no choice but to go out and walk on your own, you need to remember a few things. Before stepping out of your home, you have to muster your composure. Muggers do not just attack anybody. They also do scan and deliberately pick their targets. When you want to walk alone, avoid bringing along too many valuables, including money, sporting expensive jewelry pieces and loads of pricey gadgets. These stuffs would just further snag the attention of attackers. When out in the open, also try to avoid looking so tensed and alarmed because aggressors would most likely pick you as their target. Better yet, when you are walking alone try to keep your composure and avoid looking so frightened.

Another thing that you have to remember is to avoid walking along poorly-lit, desolated streets and alleys. Places like these are really favorable for those bad guys to finally do their evil plot on you. Thus, when you would like to go hiking or walking all by yourself, always try to see to it that you do it in public places. There's a slight chance that you would get mugged obviously because there are loads of people all over.

Arm Yourself
You may also carry along with you some self-defense weapons. There's actually a wide array of weapons for you to choose from, ranging from lethal to non-lethal ones. However, when you are not as clever in using guns better yet opt for non-lethal weapons such as tasers and stun guns. These things are practically easier for you to use. You don't need formal training to properly use it. Non-lethal weapons are also handy and these would fit even in small purses and bags so you can carry them nearly everywhere. The good thing about carrying non-lethal weapons is that you don't need a license for such.

Trust your instincts
Above all, you should learn to trust your gut feeling because more often than not, this should be right. Stay alert and be extra keen on how everyone is acting so you can detect those who are acting suspiciously. Doing so would help get your self prepared for the looming danger. So, the next time you go walking solo you can try remembering these things to help keep you safe.

A commissioned portrait of Jake the Gordon Setter, painted in pastel pencils on sanded paper (Fisher 400). I wish I could really work this fast, but in reality it took about 20 hours. The painting measures about 18x16". To answer the FAQs that I usually get: I don't use water or any fluids. The background is in soft pastel sticks, the 'brush' looking thing I use on it at the start is a silicon 'colour shaper' tool: it blends the colours. The dog is done entirely with pastel pencils. Mostly I use Faber Castell & Schwann CarbOthello. I used to use Derwent, but have had quality issues so I've stopped using them and cannot recommend them. The stick you can see some of the time is a Mahl stick, as used by signwriters. It's just to lean my hand on without smudging the work. I do sell my work and take portrait commissions in the UK (it's my living, so please don't ask for freebies!), more about that on my website for anyone interested. I don't do any teaching or tuition, I just make these videos from time to time because people seem to enjoy watching the process. Hope you do too... happy viewing!

How To Stop Your Parrot's Biting In 7 Days

Do you own a parrot that bites? Would you like me to share some proven principals for getting your parrot to stop biting? If so, you're about to discover how to get rid of your parrot's biting, using a strategy I call "Target Training".

Never heard of target training? I'm not surprised. Most so called parrot behavior "Gurus" have been so busy standing on their soapboxes, preaching to everyone that "if we just loved our parrots more, they'd start to be nice" - what a bunch of garbage! And what they're preaching couldn't be further from the truth.

Let's face it. When most people buy a baby parrot, it's just been hand fed, it's still a baby, not yet strong enough to bite, and it's the cutest, cuddliest little thing in the world. And they actually stay that way, for several months & even years.

But then every parrot eventually comes into what I call their "Teenage Years". It's basically puberty for your bird. Its hormones are a wreck, it starts wanting a mate, and just like your teenage kids, parrot's tend to become a bit troublesome during this time, and there's no amount of love that can turn their behavior around. Instead the magical fix is to do what every therapist says to their emotionally challenged clients when their relationships are in a mess - "work on strengthening your communication".

And that's exactly what "Target Training" does. It develops a level of communication with your bird that both of you can understand.

Here's how it works. You train your parrot to understand simple commands from you, or cues. Then you teach your parrot that whenever he follows these cues, he gets rewarded - usually with a really tasty treat! The more commands you teach your parrot, the better the level of communication and the more your parrot will trust you, and cease to bite you.

The very first and most basic level of target training is teaching your parrot to touch the end of a small wooden stick, or wooden dowel. You reward your parrot every time he touches the end of the wooden dowel by giving him a treat each time, even if when he touches it, he's lashing out at the dowel.

And with time, the parrot realizes that you're calling the shots, and that you're actually opening up a new level of communication to him that he never knew existed. He'll start to realize that if he follows your cues, and touches the end of the stick like you've asked him to, that you'll reward him... and reward him well.

Your parrot will start to trust you so much, that a well target trained parrot, can be known to actually be trained to do whatever it takes to touch the end of that stick, even by flying or Walking Stick, you'll open up that level of communication it takes to get your parrot to realize you really are a nice person and that he doesn't need to bite you to get what he wants after all. Making your parrot training efforts MUCH easier!

Why Am I Not Losing Weight

After struggling all my life to lose weight I finally figured it out. It's not just one thing; it's a combination of several things. I hope this article can help other break the same cycle I was in. By incorporating all the tools I'll give you below, you to should have the success that I am now enjoying.

The first thing you need to do is to eat health. This was the one thing I struggled with the most while trying to lose weight. I found myself always reverting back to my old bad habits. You know these habits, they are what I call, the fast food and binge habits. These habits return when your diet consists of starving yourself or only eating one or two meals a day. The key for me to breaking these habits was simple and hard at the same time. I had to relearn how to eat. You heard it before eat smaller meals, eat only when you're hungry, and eat healthier foods.

OK, lets take the first one, eating smaller meals. Here's the logic, it takes your brain a little time to catch up to your stomach while eating. If you eat until you're full, you have probably eaten too much. So by eating a small meal, even if you still fell hungry, it's let your brain catch up and about 30 minutes after you're done, you should not fell hungry. To help with the hungry felling there is nothing better then good old WATER. Do not drink while eating, finish your meal then have a glass or two of water. You want to feel full not bloated.

Next eat only when hungry. This one can be hard, if you have battled a weight problem for many years. Do you believe that in a day you will open your refrigerator or cupboards where you store food, on average of 40 time a day snacking. And out of the 40 time you may only be hungry once or twice. Think about it, everyone does it. So we need to break this bad habit and only eat when hungry. A good rule of thumb to help with this is always having fresh fruit around. This way if you're going to snack, it's something healthy. Also by only eating when you're hungry, which may in tale eating 4-6 times a day, you keep your digestion system busy but not overloaded. This helps prevent a lot of health problems you may have, like chronic diarrhea, heart burn, and abdominal cramps and even acid reflux. In short stop the snacking and eat when hungry.

Finally the hardest to concur is eating healthy foods. The body need a preset amount of protein, fiber, carb's (yes carbohydrates), fats (these are non saturated fats), and vitamins and minerals. Protein comes mainly from lean meats, beans, and nuts. Fiber comes from your fruits and vegetables. Carbohydrates come from many sources, like breads and pastas. Fats also come from many sources, like dairy and oils. You should try to combine all these things in a meal and if you can't that's okay. Just mix it up from meal to meal. Fast food is the enemy, remember that. If you must eat out it's up to you to make the right choice. Go ahead and indulge once a week but make sure you don't binge eat in the process. Remember small meals.

The last thing I'm going to talk about is the importance of exercise, vitamins, supplements, and regular doctor visits. Even though you will lose weight by changing your eating habits, it is important to keep a health body and heart. Diet in combination with exercise will melt the fat away faster. Even if it's just Walking Stick with it; as soon as you start slipping it can be disastrous.

Weight Loss Exercises - The Best Cardio Routines to Lose Weight

One of the best ways to accelerate weight loss is to do cardio routines. Cardio gets your heart rate up, gets the blood flowing, raises body temperature and heightens calorie consumption. Cardio also strengthens your heart and lungs, improve circulation and other bodily functions. If done correctly, cardio routines can prove to be a valuable asset in your health and weight loss program.

But which cardio routines work best for you? Which are the best weight loss exercises?

Here are common cardio routines arranged from the most to the least effective in terms of weight loss:

1. Running - Running is a massive cardio routine because it gets every part of your body moving. Running can be a high intensity workout all by itself. If you do run, make sure to swing your arms and really get your entire body into the motion. Take care not to run if you experience knee or back pain. Try running on a soft surface such as grass or sand and minimize the time you run on asphalt. If you suffered any sort of physical injury in the past, consult your doctor before running.

2. Cycling - Bicycle riding (as long as it's done outdoors) is a great cardio routine. Of course you need to be proficient in riding a bike, but it can really get your heart pumping. Make sure to ride only in safe places. Avoid the side of busy roads. Stick to bicycle lanes whenever possible.

3. Rowing Machine - The rowing machine is a personal favorite of mine as it's not only a cardio machine but also a great strength builder for the back and biceps. The one downfall of this machine is that you're sitting down while doing it. But pumping the rows back and forth gets you sweating in a minute. Of course, rowing a canoe, if that is possible for you, is even more effective.

4. Walking - Walking is also a great cardio routine. Don't stroll, do brisk walking and get your arms into the motion. For added difficulty, you can try walking with small dumbbells or wrist-strap-on weights. Try combining interval running with walking for accelerated weight loss.

5. Swimming - Swimming is a great body building cardio routine as it strengthens the entire body. However, it is difficult for regular swimmers to get their heart rate up while swimming and maintaining that heart rate for a long time.

6. Elliptical - The elliptical is great for people who suffered knee injuries as it doesn't jar your legs. However, it has almost zero resistance and usually doesn't get your upper body into the motion. I like incorporating it into my cool down routine for some added calorie burning.

7. Gym bicycle - I dislike the gym bicycle because you usually sit back and just pedal away. The very act of sitting down makes this a much less effective routine.

Any of the 7 routines I've laid out are good weight loss exercises. Some are more intense than others but can be perfect for you. Make sure to enjoy your cardio routines. Enjoying yourself will also accelerate your weight loss.

· Sock N Lock

This is one of the easiest homemade self-defense gadgets that you can do. Simply put, you just need to put a heavy lock inside a balled up sock. Afterwards, you need to put the balled up sock with the lock in it inside the other sock. Now, you have a weapon similar to the Morning Star weapon that they used in the medieval times. Instead of a lock, you can also use a baseball, golf ball or billiard ball.

· Self-defense stick

You can make several self-defense gadgets from sticks. You can turn a short piece of stick into a Kubotan key chain and you have a self-defense weapon that you can use in several ways. You can use a long piece of stick as is. Better yet, just use a walking cane.

Again, investing in real self-defense gadgets is better but using homemade ones is also good especially if you know how to use it. The important thing is you have gadgets that can help you defend yourself.
